UNI GYŐR ETO HC pulled off an incredible feat in the 2024/25 season, having reached the finals of both the Andersen League and the EUHL. The team began their run in the finals this week, first travelling to Banská Bystrica for the EUHL, where they faced UMB, last year’s champions and the team that had comfortably won the regular season.
The first two matches of the best-of-three series were played away from home. There was a huge upset on Wednesday, as our team triumphed 4–3 in extra time! The first period was uneventful, but the match really picked up in the second. Thanks to Bence Dézsi’s successful penalty, we went into the break with a 3–2 lead. Early in the third period, UMB managed to equalise, and with no further goals scored, the match went into overtime. During this, Hunor Gergely kept the team in the game with some incredible saves, whilst the goalpost spared our opponents. Penalties also made things difficult, but we managed to defend whilst a man down, and then, in the 71st minute, Benedek Madácsi sealed the victory!
The following day, on Thursday evening, another closely fought contest took place on the ice, but this time UMB made more effective use of their chances. They took the lead early in the first period, then converted both a single and a double power play into goals. In the second period, they scored whilst a man down and even converted a penalty, ultimately winning the match 7–0.
Although the result of the second match did not go as expected, our team can return home with pride, as they managed to secure a victory on the defending champions’ home ground, thereby taking away some of their home advantage. This clearly showed that UMB are not unbeatable either.
The tie will continue on Monday and Tuesday (7–8 April) in Győr, at the Győr University Ice Sports Centre, where we will be competing for the championship title in front of a home crowd.
Meanwhile, the Andersen League final is also getting underway, with us taking to the ice in Szeged on Saturday (5 April) to face Goodwill Pharma Stilaxx Szeged.
One thing’s for sure: we’ve got an exciting period ahead of us, and we’ll need the support of all our fans! Come on, UNI GYŐR ETO HC!
